Storehouse Wellington Food Bank took the initiative to provide weekly fresh meals to seniors in the Wellington Community. They saw an opportunity to care for and support the overall health and well-being of the seniors by providing healthy meals for seniors on a weekly basis. The meals provide peace of mind, comfort and joy, a sense of belonging and community. The endeavour maintains the dignity and independence of the seniors, helps them stay safe, as they enjoy healthy, delicious meals. Thanks to a matching grant received from the Huff Family Fund, administered by The County Foundation, the Food Bank is able to continue this highly beneficial program of meals for seniors, delivered right to their door. Chef Michael Hoy leads a team of culinary volunteers in preparing, cooking, and delivering the meals each Friday which are prepared at the Wellington Legion. The facility is excellent and Chef Hoy is quick to express his thanks for the amazing support the Legion provides – not just to this program but also for their other stellar support to other community projects. For Chef Hoy this meal program is a way to give back to a community he obviously loves. His meals are seasonal selections, using local produce provided by local farms and farm markets. Again he expresses his thanks for the generosity of local farmers for the extra produce they grow and provide to the program. His first consideration in determining the weekly meals is nutrition. He adds that on occasion he will provide some haute cuisine to the menu, because the clients are well deserving. Sincere thanks to the Huff Family Fund for enabling this grant which supports food security, health, wellbeing, and belonging, in the County.
